DeShaw, Ferreira, Smolczyk, Moir and Bancroft Earn Swimming & Diving Honors

Cathryn DeShaw and Rodrigo Ferreira of North Dakota have been named the NCC Swimmers of the Week while Jill Smolczyk & Cole Moir of South Dakota and Chris Bancroft of North Dakota have been honored as the NCC Divers of the Week.

DeShaw, a freshman from Stillwater, Minn., placed second in the 200 individual medley (2:10.19) and 200 backstroke (2:05.27) and fourth in the 100 backstroke (:58.90) at the Minnesota Challenge in Minneapolis, Minn. In addition she was part of the winning 400 freestyle and 800 freestyle relay teams and the second place 400 medley relay.

Ferreira, a senior from Juiz de Fora, MG, Brazil, won the 100 backstroke (:48.86) and was four th in the 50 freestyle (:20.82) at the Minnesota Challenge. He also helped the 400 freestyle relay team to a win.

Smolczyk, a junior from Omaha, Neb., won both boards, including a record-setting performance on the 3-meter board, at the USD Diving Invitational. Smolczyk won the 3-meter board (11 dives) while setting school and pool records with a score of 477.55 in the finals. She broke the 15-year old pool record held by Tamara Block, who had a score of 473.95 in 1992. Smolczyk also broke the pool record of Mary Ahlin of St. Cloud State, who scored 473.95 points in 1999. Smolczyk's score was also an automatic qualifying mark for the NCAA Division II nationals for which she has already qualified. Smolczyk won the 1M board with a score of 392.10.

Moir, a senior from Cody, Wyo., won the 11-dive 1-meter board with an NCAA Division II qualifying mark and finished third on the 3-meter board at the USD Diving Invitational. On Friday, Moir had a score of 465.35 on the 1-meter, which is an automatic qualifying score for the NCAA Division II nationals. Moir finished third on the 3-meter board with a score of 414.25.

Bancroft, a junior from Anchorage, Alaska, won the 3-meter (425.0) and placed second on the one-meter board (443.65), both qualifying scores for the NCAA meet, at the USD Diving Invitational.
