St. Cloud State Men's Tennis Wins Seventh Consecutive NCC Title
The St. Cloud State University men's tennis team captured its seventh consecutive North Central Conference championship on Friday, April 25 at the Gold's Gym Tennis Center in nearby Sartell, Minn.
The Huskies posted 34 points in the tournament, as Winona State was second with 26 points. Minnesota State (19) and Augustana (11) completed the tournament field. This marked the Huskies' 15th NCC championship since 1986, and it also marked the final men's tennis tournament in the history of the always rugged North Central Conference as the league will disband at the end of the 2008 season.
"We really stepped it up today," SCSU coach Jerry Anderson said. "We had a nice effort by everyone and played some very good tennis. Our players accomplished what they set out to do today, and they did it in a more powerful way than I expected."
SCSU dominated the tournament with NCC crowns won in several flights. Junior Wojciech Batorski added a crown at first singles with a 7-5, 6-2 victory over WSU's Gage Davidson. At second singles, Mike Masters won the NCC title and SCSU's Joey Jachymowski collected another NCC title at third singles.
To complete the run, SCSU's Ryan Schoenefeld gained top honors at fifth singles and freshman Shane Ecklund won first place for the Huskies at sixth singles.
In doubles play, SCSU won all three flights. At first doubles, Batorski and Master rolled to a quick 8-1 win for first place in the NCC. Jachymowski and Schoenefeld scored an 8-4 title win at second doubles, while third doubles went to Kevin Lukens and Kevin Bauleke with an 8-5 win.
