North Dakota Continues In Lead For North Central Conference Cup

North Dakota opened up its lead in the standings for the North Central Conference Cup through the winter season. The Sioux were leading by two points at the end of fall season and now enjoy a 5 1/2-point cushion after the winter season. Minnesota State moved from fourth place to second place while South Dakota lept from sixth place to third place in the latest tally.

North Dakota leads the women's all-sports trophy standings with 38.5 points by capturing the championships in basketball and swimming & diving while finishing third in indoor track & field. Nebraska-Omaha, the women's leader after the fall season, slipped to second place, only two points behind the Sioux. The Mavericks won the indoor track & field title, finished second in swimming & diving and seventh in basketball. Third through fifth positions on the women's side are seperated by three points with South Dakota at 28.5, Augustana at 27.5 and Minnesota State at 26.5.

Minnesota State won the wrestling title, tied for the basketball title, finished second in indoor track & field and finished third in swimming & diving on the men's side to claim a 5 1/2-point lead for the men's all-sports trophy. South Dakota moved from fifth to second in the men's tally on the strength of the indoor track & field title, tying for the basketball title and finishing fourth in the swimming & diving championship. North Dakota is only one point behind South Dakota after winning the swimming & diving title.

This season marks the fourth time that The North Central Conference Cup is being awarded. The recipient of the Cup is determined by adding together the points received in the Men's and Women's All-Sports Trophy standings. Points are awarded on a basis where the highest points possible is determined by the number of teams in the sport (i.e. if 7 teams are in the championship then 7 is awarded for first, 6 for second, etc.; if 5 teams are entered it would be 5 for first, 4 for second, etc.)
